Cacoo Video Chat

Built an in-app video chat so teams could collaborate without ever leaving their work.

PROBLEM

For users, switching between Cacoo and third-party video tools during live brainstorming sessions caused a friction point—leading to a loss of context, fragmented communication, and disrupted workflows. By integrating in-app video chat, we allowed teams to collaborate seamlessly where their work lived. This not only upgraded the user experience but also kept Cacoo competitive, boosting user engagement and retention by eliminating the need for outside apps.

PROCESS

  • Evaluated product architecture to determine whether to integrate the video feature into the existing editor interface or design it as a standalone component.

  • Defined real-time collaboration logic, establishing constraints so video chat functionality dynamically maps only to users actively collaborating on the canvas.

  • Mapped user flows and entry points to ensure a low-friction journey from discovering the feature to launching a
    live call.

BACKGROUND

Including video chat facilitates teams with more options to better communicate. During the Covid pandemic, it could not have been a better time to provide our work-from-home users with virtual face-to-face interaction while using our product. Not to mention users will not have to access a third-party app to conduct video calls. Having a blank sheet, diagram, or presentation to kick start a meeting is a great way to keep everyone engaged.

By eliminating the friction of third-party switching, we transformed Cacoo from a static canvas into a live, synchronous collaboration hub.
