Cacoo Shapes Panel

PROBLEM

The shapes library needed to be reorganized and updated because we identified a discoverability issue. The shapes were all in one large menu that overlapped the editor so we wanted to separate the basic shapes from the diagram specific shape libraries. On top of all of this search and navigation needed improvement.

BACKGROUND

The intention of the shapes panel was to provide a convenient means of navigating, but it came to our attention via the analytics that this feature was highly underutilized. Upon inspection, we found that users were having trouble getting to the basic shapes panel. It was important to redesign this feature since the shapes panel is a pivotal part of being able to create diagrams in Cacoo. Furthermore, we also needed to extend the shapes panel to support third-party integrations.

The main goal was to improve usability, discoverability, and to add additional third-party shapes and icons.

PROCESS

  • Identified a discoverability problem by looking at analytics and through customer feedback from the support team.

  • Developed a new search feature for improved navigation.

  • Designed multiple versions and presented them to users for user testing.

  • Ultimately made a decision to split the shape panel into two separate entities and improved the introductory popovers.

Changing an existing feature came with challenges, but ultimately was well received.
